Dr. Sean Gourley is the founder and CTO of Quid. He is a Physicist by training and has studied the mathematical patterns of war and terrorism. This research has taken him all over the world from the Pentagon, to the United Nations and Iraq. Previously, Sean worked at NASA on self-repairing nano-circuits and is a two-time New Zealand track and field champion. Sean is now based in San Francisco where he is building tools to augment human intelligence.

Description of Talk:
Each year computers are getting faster, but at the same time we as humans are getting better at using them. The top chess players in the world are not humans OR computers, but combinations of humans AND computers. In this talk, Sean Gourley examines this world of augmented intelligence and shows how our understanding of the human brain is shaping the way we visualize and interact with big data. Gourley argues that the world we are living in is too complex for any single human mind to understand and that we need to team up with machines to make better decisions.

Since officially launching the Brain Endowment for Autism Research Sciences (BEARS) tissue program in February of 2012, Dr. Cyndi Schumann has given outreach lectures to the community, parent organizations, organ procurement organizations, and health care providers across the county on the critical need for brain donation to autism research. Dr. Schumann's multidisciplinary research focus is on characterizing neuroanatomical, cellular, and molecular development of the brain in typical children and those with autism. She has published over 20 articles in the last few years in books and high-impact journals, including the first longitudinal MRI study of brain development in toddlers and children with autism.

David Jones is currently the Project Coordinator for the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium, aiming to develop printable organic solar cells, based at the University of Melbourne. The consortium brings together researchers from the University of Melbourne, Monash University and CSIRO MSE with key industrial collaborators BlueScope Steel, Securency International, Innovia Films and Robert Bosch (SEA) in the development of OPV. He received both his BSc (Hons. 1986), and PhD (Chemistry) (1995) from the University of Tasmania. He completed postdoctoral research periods in Sheffield, UK (Organic Chemistry) and Cardiff, UK (organometallic chemistry and catalysts) before moving to Imperial College London where he was the Team Leader in the BP catalysts discovery team headed by Professor Vernon Gibson. In 2004 he joined Professor Andrew Holmes at Cambridge University before relocating with Professor Holmes to the Bio21 Institute at the University of Melbourne.
